4. Moisture & Humidity

Excessive moisture can be extremely damaging to your cabinetry. Spills/Leaks must be cleaned up with a damp soft cloth followed by a dry soft cloth to avoid streaks. Be careful when cleaning floors and ensure that any wet areas are dried with a dry soft cloth to avoid damage to your toekicks. Extremes in temperatures and humidity can cause wood to expand & contract which may seriously damage your cabinetry. A stable, ambient humidity level at approximately 35% is recommended year round requiring a humidifier in Calgary and surrounding areas as central heating dries air to dangerously low humidity levels. Denca strongly recommends that a humidifier is installed and set at the recommended level in any home that has solid wood cabinetry, wood floors and/or other wood furniture. A consistent temperature and humidity must be maintained. Denca will not cover the cost to repair or replace defects attributed to temperature or humidity such as shrinking, warping, cracking or peeling.

5. Wood Doors & Cabinet Surfaces

Wood doors & surfaces are finished with a hard-wearing catalyzed lacquer that chemically bonds to the surface & seals it to prevent penetration & damage from dirt, grease & common household chemicals. To clean & dust surfaces use a clean, damp soft cloth & dry promptly with a second clean soft cloth to avoid streaks. To clean harder-to-remove dirt and grease, use a water-soluble, non-abrasive cleaning solution such as mild-soap or dishwashing liquid: use a clean cloth dampened with a solution of warm water and mild soap, rinse with a clean water-dampened cloth and dry immediately with a soft, clean cloth. Avoid using harsh and abrasive cleaners, cleaners such as “Orange-Glo” or brushes or pads to clean your cabinetry. For stubborn, hard-to-remove grease, use a clean soft cloth dampened with a liquid cleaner such as Windex or mineral spirits.Polishing is not required to maintain the natural luster of the finish and polishing materials of any kind. Waxes or chemical polishers such as Pledge may damage the surface by creating a sticky layer that attracts dirt and dust.

6. Corian Counter Care

There are some simple principles that apply to caring for any surface.

  • Use a trivet or pad for setting down hot pots and pans.
  • Most counters will chip or dent if they are hit with a heavy object, so try not to bang heavy pots or equipment on them.

Always do your chopping and dicing on a wooden or plastic chopping board, not the bare counter. Chopping boards prevent scratches and dents in the counter surface, which are unsightly and can harbor dangerous bacteria. For more detailed information , please visit www.dupont.com/corian. Routine Care of Your Corian® CountertopThere are three types of Corian® countertop finishes: matte/satin, semi-gloss and high-gloss*. Most countertops are finished with a matte/satin finish. All Corian® sinks have a matte/satin finish. Soapy water, ammonia based cleaners (not window cleaners as they can leave a waxy build up that may dull the surface) or commercially available solid surface cleaners will remove most dirt and residue from all types of finishes. Stubborn residue will require a little stronger cleaner.Follow the recommendations below to properly clean your countertop and sink. Some colors of Corian® may require more frequent cleaning to maintain a uniform finish. Darker colors tend to require more attention than lighter colors. Over time, even with proper care, your countertop will acquire a patina, changing the appearance of the finish. You may restore the look of the original finish by following the refurbishing guidelines below.A KEY TO KEEPING YOUR COUNTERTOPS LOOKING GOOD IS TO THOROUGHLY RINSE & WIPE COMPLETELY DRY AFTER CLEANING

7. Natural Stone Care

Natural Stone is an excellent investment adding many years of beauty and enjoyment when properly cared for. Natural stone has been formed over millions of years. We usually think of stone as being "hard", it is a porous material that can absorb spills and stains if left untreated. Sealing your stone every 2-5 years, with a quality sealer will prevent most spills from damaging your investment. Sealing can easily be done at home with product. Keeping your stone free of dust and dirt will minimize scratches and wear-patterns that can develop from the everyday use of some natural stone such as marble and limestone. Sweep and dust all natural stone surfaces regularly. DIAMONDS AND OTHER GRANITE (including sand) WILL SCRATCH ALL NATURAL STONE.Clean your natural stone on a regular basis with warm water and a clean, non-abrasive cloth, sponge, or mop. In addition, using a neutral cleaner specifically formulated for natural stone will help remove soils that normal dusting or damp mopping leave behind. Do not use general purpose cleaners or you may damage your stone or the sealer applied. Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar, or other acids as these may etch the stone surface and damage the polish. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface.DO'S AND DON'TS
DO use coasters under glasses, especially if the beverage contains alcohol or citrus juices.
DO use trivets or mats under hot dishes or cookware. Your countertop can take the heat, your sealant may become dull in the area exposed to direct heat.
DO blot up spills immediately to minimize permanent damage to the stone.
DON'T use vinegar, bleach, ammonia or other general purpose cleaners.
DON'T use cleaners that contain acid such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners, or tub and tile cleaners.
DON'T use abrasive cleaners such as dry cleansers or soft cleansers.

8.  Cleaning Stainless Steel

Wipe down with a soft cloth and warm soapy water (liquid dish detergent is acceptable) followed by a dry soft cloth. Do not use acids, abrasives, strong detergents, solvents, or scouring pads. Stainless steel should be treated with a quality stainless steel cleaner such as Stainless Steel Magic®. Do not polish across the grain or in circles.

9. Butcher Block Care & Maintenance

Initial Application By observing the following suggestions for it’s care and maintenance you can extend the life of your butcher block by 5 to 10 years.   Upon receipt of you butcher block wipe it down well with a tack cloth to remove any remaining sawdust created during the finish sanding process.  When you feel confident that you have created a dust free surface you may begin to prepare your block for use by applying a coat of denaturalized mineral oil.   Denaturalized mineral oil is available at your local hardware store.  For an average size butcher block one 250 ml bottle should provide you with enough oil to apply your sealant coats as well as approximately four to six months worth of maintenance.  Denaturalized mineral oil is recommended over other oil products because it is non-toxic, food grade and has a high resistance to spoilage. Never use Canola, Olive or other cooking oils, as they will go rancid. When applying your first coat of oil spread a generous amount across the face of the block, being sure to reach all of the edges.  Allow the oil to sit for 24 hours or until you can see that the wood has absorbed it all.  Once the first coat is absorbed repeat the procedure on the backside of you butcher block. (If you are treating a counter top repeat the procedure on the face.)  Once both sides of your butcher block have been treated apply a second coat to both faces in a similar manner. Your butcher block is now ready for use.  Ongoing care instructions

  1. Once every several weeks, (depending upon the use and household conditions), apply an even coat of denaturalized mineral oil to the work surface of your butcher block using a clean lint free cloth.
  2. DO NOT allow moisture of any type to stand on the block for long periods of time.  Don’t let fresh, wet meats lay on the block longer than necessary. Brine, water and blood can soak into the wood, causing the block to expand, the wood to soften, and affects the strength of the glued joints.
  3. Use a good steel scraper or spatula several times a day, as necessary to keep the cutting surface clean and sanitary.  Do not use a steel brush on the cutting surface of your butcher block.
  4. Try to avoid cutting continuously in the same place on the top of your block.  Distribute your cutting over the entire work surface so that it will wear evenly.  DON’T use a razor-edged cleaver.  It will chip or splinter the wood and produce soft spots.
  5. To clean your block use only a mild detergent, warm water and a soft cloth.  Allow block to air dry thoroughly between uses.  This will kill any bacteria that remain on the surface.
  6. Your butcher block should be turned over periodically to allow even usage to both work surfaces and extend the life of the block.
  7. NEVER put your butcher block in the dishwasher
